FAQ – The most important questions and answers
at a glance
We have compiled the most common questions our patients ask us and the answers below.
How long does orthodontic treatment take?
A distinction is made between the active and the passive phase. The active phase is the phase in which the position of the teeth and jaws is usually corrected using braces, with check-ups being scheduled at a specific rhythm between 3 and 8 weeks. How long the active orthodontic treatment lasts in our orthodontic practice in Berlin Mitte varies from case to case . However, it does not exceed three years. Then the so-called retention phase sets in to permanently stabilize the desired jaw and tooth position. This takes about two years.
When is preventive or early treatment necessary for children?
Teeth can grow crooked even with the first milk teeth. Crooked jaw growth and malocclusions should be treated early in order to avoid more extensive and protracted treatments later. You should approach your child in the following cases:
- The jaw grows crooked.
- The child knocked out a baby tooth, for example while playing.
- The child’s mouth is always open.
- When the teeth need space because they are too tight or criss-cross.
- With constant thumb sucking that you cannot stop your child. For this purpose,
there are special oral vestibule plates to prevent thumb sucking and in this way to avoid
misaligned jaws and teeth in the long term.
A bracket has come loose in the braces. What can I do?
Come to our orthodontic practice in Berlin Mitte as soon as possible . The bracket is immediately replaced or reattached. Otherwise the treatment time will be longer.
How do you clean braces?
With removable braces, regular, thorough cleaning is essential and should take place at least once a day. A hard toothbrush and toothpaste are well suited for this, although you should be careful not to bend the wires. The braces must then be stored correctly. A clip box is well suited for this.
Even with fixed braces, careful oral hygiene is very important so that no food residues stick and thus cause bacterial foci that can attack gums and teeth. Find out more about professional mouth cleaning from us.
Does wearing braces cause pain?
This is particularly possible at the beginning of the treatment, because the teeth are moved in the jaw by the braces. As a rule, this only applies to the initial phase and, moreover, the pain is not very pronounced. Pain can be avoided entirely with so-called self-ligating brackets, as these require less force to move the teeth. Nevertheless, if you have any pain, you should, if necessary, come to our orthodontic practice in Berlin Mitte or call us so that we can clarify whether the pain may have another cause.
Do the materials used to make braces contain allergens?
The materials used in braces are subject to the strict regulations of the Medical Products Act (MPG) and must bear the CE mark. Therefore, allergic reactions should not occur. Optionally, particularly well-tolerated materials such as ceramics or pure titanium can also be used, but these are somewhat more expensive.
What does a treatment cost?
It is very different. For children and adolescents up to the age of 18, the health insurance companies cover the costs from the KIG severity level 3, 4 or 5. Adults bear the costs completely themselves. These depend on which form of treatment is chosen. Metal brackets cost around EUR 1,000 per year of treatment, other variants can be significantly more expensive.
