Professional sports mouthguard

Sport has many positive effects on our health and well-being. Even if you suffer from tension in the temporomandibular joints and cervical spine, any doctor will recommend that you exercise regularly.

But of course, sport also entails a significantly increased risk of accidents. This applies in particular to sports in which there is pronounced physical contact and which can sometimes be a bit lively, for example hockey, rugby, soccer, boxing, basketball, Asian martial arts, motocross or handball. The German Society for Dentistry, Oral and Maxillofacial Medicine (DGZMK) therefore expressly recommends the use of mouthguard splints in very specific sports where there is an increased risk to the mouth and teeth. For this reason, children, adolescents and adults often use a so-called “ Boil & Bite ” mouthguard from the department store, but such a mask has serious disadvantages. On the one hand, it leads to a false sense of security, loosens up during sporting activities and does not fit well. In this respect, such a ready-made mouthguard can hinder more than it really protects. Protect yourself and your children in a professional manner with the right sports mouthguard. But what does such a thing look like?

A sports mouthguard only offers optimal protection if it fits perfectly and has the exact fit. That is why a sports mouthguard in our orthodontic practice in Berlin Mitte will be individually adapted to the teeth. This also has the advantage that such protection is characterized by high wearing comfort and free breathing, speaking and athletic performance are not hindered. You can then concentrate fully on your activities without having to worry about damaging the gums, jaws, teeth and temporomandibular joints and without having to deal with a badly fitting , constantly slipping mouthguard. With a badly fitting mouthguard, top athletic performance is not possible.

A professional sports mouthguard is also made with a special strength and elasticity. Depending on the sport, a two- or three-layer face mask is recommended. In general, models with two layers fulfill the task of protecting the rows of teeth against each other if flat impacts occur frequently. Examples are wrestling, basketball, judo, boxing or handball. Models with three layers are made much harder and are therefore suitable for sports where small-scale but very hard hits can occur: some ice hockey, squash, karate, skateboarding, kickboxing or field hockey.

Some very elaborate protective devices can even absorb midface injuries and concussions. In this respect, a professional sports mouthguard does much more than a ready-made protection off the rack. Apart from that, it has a lifespan up to ten times longer than cheap models. A “ Boil & Bite ” mouthguard often slips, which is why there is increased chewing movements. For this reason, an off-the-shelf model wears out much faster.

In addition, such protection in our orthodontic practice in Berlin Mitte can be optically designed according to customer requirements: Either discreetly and inconspicuously or in certain colors such as the club colors, with a certain logo or a certain image, etc. The customers can choose the color and structure of the mouthguard choose.

In any case, the cost of a knocked out tooth, for example, is many times higher, not to mention all the inconvenience that this can bring with it.
