Invisible braces for adults

Ceramic and plastic brackets also do not suit everyone’s taste. Nevertheless, many adult patients in our orthodontic practice in Berlin Mitte want efficient and sustainable orthodontic treatment. Many also say: “I treat myself to beautiful, straight teeth.” The solutions in this case are called transparent or invisible aligners (the best-known trade name is Invisalign ©) or lingual braces.

Transparent aligners

Transparent aligners are removable braces that have to be removed, for example, to brush your teeth or to eat. Using precise 3-D technology, in our orthodontic practice in Berlin Mitte , custom – fit splints made of high-quality, transparent plastic are created and adapted to the individual needs of the patient. At every follow-up visit (every two weeks), the patient receives a set of splints which, compared to the previous model, always move the teeth a little until the teeth are in the correct position. To achieve a successful treatment, clear aligners should be worn for about 22 hours a day.

It should be noted that even with all their advantages , transparent aligners are a foreign body in the mouth to which bacteria can adhere. They therefore require regular, thorough cleaning and careful oral hygiene. Otherwise the braces can become the basis for tooth decay and inflammation of the gums.

Transparent aligners are suitable for correcting mild to moderate jaw and tooth misalignments.

Lingual braces

Lingual braces are very effective, optically attractive (because they are invisible), but also cost-intensive options for correcting misaligned jaws and teeth. Practically all misalignments can be corrected with these braces, even severe cases. The results are usually excellent. This is because lingual braces allow pressure to be applied directly to the root of the tooth as well, thus perfectly positioning the teeth. The results are therefore particularly good.

The trick is that in that case the brackets are attached to the inside of the teeth. This is where the name lingual brace comes from (from Latin lingua , which means something on the side of the tongue). These types of braces have the following advantages:

  • very high wearing comfort, practically no longer noticeable after one to two weeks,
the patient can then speak and chew without restriction
  • very easy to care for, significantly less cleaning intensive than other fixed braces
  • thus less caries and gingivitis formation
  • Visually completely invisible, because on the inside, no impairment of the appearance
  • very break-proof because it contains a high gold content
  • The other materials are also allergy-free and therefore suitable for everyone
  • Tailor-made, individual production through precise 3-D technology,
which enables the most precise positioning of the teeth and the jaw
  • high adhesive force

The following tooth and jaw misalignments can be corrected very well with lingual braces in our orthodontic practice in Berlin Mitte :

  • Crowding : the roots of the teeth partially touch and the crowns of the teeth overlap
  • Gap: Closing gaps in the area of the tooth roots and crowns
  • Lateral cross bite: Improvement of the interlocking of the teeth
  • Open bite: need to move teeth and roots up or down
  • Deep bite : Front teeth must be moved until they are at an ideal angle to one another
  • Overbite: The upper jaw teeth stand out clearly. Tooth crowns and tooth roots of the
upper and lower jaws need to be better positioned in relation to one another.
  • Progeny (reverse bite): Entire lower jaw including chin is too far forward.
The rows of teeth must be placed correctly in relation to one another .

All of these are reasons why lingual braces are particularly in demand. Unfortunately, the statutory health insurances do not cover the costs, neither for children and adolescents nor for adults. In the case of privately insured persons, it can be worthwhile to ask the health insurance company whether they will contribute a subsidy. It is of course ideal if at least part of the costs is covered by additional dental insurance.
